Free Trees Available Throughout The Province: Struthers
September 22, 2009
NATIONAL FOREST WEEK OBSERVED IN MANITOBA
Protecting Manitoba’s forests for environmental, social and economic benefits is a priority of the province, Conservation Minister Stan Struthers said today during National Forest Week in Manitoba, which runs until Sept. 26.“Our forests provide vast wildlife habitat, soil and crop protection, and recreation opportunities for millions of Manitobans and visitors alike, all while supporting thousands of jobs within a sustainable forestry industry,” said Struthers. “We commend our many partners, including the Manitoba Forestry Association, for their ongoing efforts to create awareness of our valuable forest resources.”
In celebration of National Forest Week, the minister will present seedlings of Manitoba’s provincial tree, the white spruce, to all members of the legislative assembly. The seedlings are provided by the Manitoba Forestry Association and grown at Pineland Forest Nursery.
Manitobans are also reminded that tomorrow is Maple Leaf Day, a national day of tree planting. There are Trees for Tomorrow tree giveaway events scheduled throughout the week at The Forks and FortWhyte Alive, and at Manitoba Conservation offices in Lac du Bonnet, Gimli, Steinbach, Brandon and Winnipeg. Trees for Tomorrow is a program helping to deliver on Manitoba’s commitment to plant five million trees over five years.
“Fall is a great time of the year to plant trees in Manitoba and we encourage everyone to do their part,” said Struthers. “At the same time, we should think about the importance of forests to our society and way of life as Manitobans.”
