Stephen Lewis says Canada spends millions fighting TB in other countries
A world-renowned Canadian health advocate says Ottawa needs to apologize to Inuit for its past treatment of tuberculosis sufferers, and to start putting money into fighting the disease right now.
“There’s no amount of money that can compensate for the historical atrocities. But there is an amount of money that can compensate for the injustice today,” said Stephen Lewis, co-director of the non-governmental organization, AIDS-Free World, after a four-day fact finding mission on TB in Nunavut.
Lewis, once the deputy executive director of UNICEF and Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, spent two days in Iqaluit last week meeting with people from the Nunavut Department of Health, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., community health organizations.
