GNWT – National Aboriginal Day 2007
YELLOWKNIFE (June 20, 2007) – National Aboriginal Day is celebrated in the Northwest Territories as an annual statutory holiday on June 21st. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) values this opportunity to honour Aboriginal cultures and recognize their values, traditions and languages.
“Here in the Northwest Territories, where half our population is of Aboriginal heritage, we have a strong reason to honour the significant contributions our Aboriginal peoples have made to shape the past and the future of our territory,” said Premier Joe Handley. The GNWT is particularly proud to recognize the historic and present-day contributions of the Dene, Métis, and Inuvialuit to the national cultural fabric.
Celebrations are planned in communities throughout the Northwest Territories, where people can enjoy traditional food, music and cultural displays. All NWT residents are encouraged to participate in the celebrations.
GNWT offices will be closed on June 21st to allow employees to celebrate the day with their families, neighbours and friends.
