GNWT Traditionally Tanned Moosehide Program will Boost NWT’s Traditional Economy

YELLOWKNIFE (August 22, 2007) – A newly created Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Moosehide Procurement Program will provide a boost to Northwest Territories’ (NWT) harvesters, artists, and crafts persons working with traditionally smoked moose hides.

Under the pilot Program announced today, the GNWT will guarantee the purchase of traditionally tanned moose hides from NWT producers and then make these hides available to artists and crafts persons at the purchase cost. To maintain the market reputation of this unique product, knowledgeable contractors with experience in valuation of these hides will be contracted by the GNWT to purchase quality pieces on behalf of the government.Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Brendan Bell says the new program will have a multiplying effect.

“These hides take much time and hard work to produce in the traditional way. By providing a guaranteed price to traditional producers and ensuring an affordable supply of traditionally prepared moosehide for the arts and crafts industry, we can stimulate production and generate additional wealth in small communities,” said Minister Bell.

The new program builds on previous efforts to encourage production of this high value product and it is intended to ensure that traditionally tanned moosehides will be available for artisans and craftspeople well into the future. The Program will be delivered through the GNWT’s existing Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program and reflects a commitment by the Department of Industry Tourism and Investment to expand the program to include traditionally finished hides.

“Direct economic benefits will also include the growth of employment and local spending, the development of traditional skills and the increased use of local resources,” Minister Bell said.
