Government of Nunavut to create new Department of Human Resources

IQALUIT, Nunavut (July 11, 2018) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) today announced the creation of a new Department of Human Resources.

The new department will consolidate the human resource functions currently housed in the Departments of Finance and Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs. This approach will closely link Inuit employment planning with the other human resource functions of the government.

“We are moving forward with our Turaaqtavut commitments aimed at strengthening human resource capacity across the GN,” said Minister responsible for the Public Service George Hickes. “The creation of a more targeted department echoes the direction of full caucus, and is an important first step forward.”

Work will begin immediately to identify the best structure for the new department, to develop budgets and realign staff, and to determine an implementation timeline. A planning team will be tasked with ensuring that the transition is smooth and effortless, and has as little impact as possible on employees, and government programs and services.
