Government of Yukon invites feedback on changes to student assessment in schools

The Government of Yukon is changing how schools assess and report on student progress and wants feedback on the proposed changes from students, teachers, parents and community members.

The proposed changes are based on research and recommendations from the Yukon Education Assessment Committee, a group of 40 Yukon educators, including representation from Yukon First Nations and School Councils. The changes to assessment are designed to align with previously announced curriculum changes for Kindergarten to Grade 9 starting in September 2017.

An online survey is now posted to the Yukon Department of Education website. The survey gives the public the opportunity to share opinions on how schools should assess and report on learning, as well as on how teachers communicate with families about student progress.

Proposed changes to assessment include giving more informal and ongoing feedback, collecting evidence of student learning, calculating and reporting grades, and how teachers report to parents.

• The deadline to complete the online survey is April 12, 2017.
• Feedback will be reviewed in April and an interim guide will be shared publicly in June 2017.
• Schools will phase in these changes over the next two years.
