Government of Yukon seeking feedback on Yukon University legislation

May 15, 2019

The Government of Yukon is asking for feedback about new legislation to support transitioning Yukon College to become Yukon University. Yukoners can share their thoughts by filling out a public survey from May 15 to June 30.

Yukon College will be the first university north of 60 offering both college and university degree programs. The new legislation will provide the legal framework for a university designation and will enable the university to provide high-quality education that supports students in meeting their academic and career goals.

The Government of Yukon is engaging with Yukon First Nations governments, municipalities and Yukon citizens on key aspects of the legislation, including the mandate for Yukon University, accountability indicators, government oversight of the university, the governance model for the university and program delivery in the communities.

New legislation is an essential step in supporting Yukon College in its transition to Yukon University. We want to hear from the public, Yukon First Nations, and municipalities about how to develop legislation that will allow Yukon College to expand and grow into a hybrid-institution that meets the diverse educational needs of all Yukoners.

Minister of Education Tracy-Anne McPhee
