Government of Yukon seeks feedback on proposed lobbyist registry

The Government of Yukon is seeking public input on the development of new lobbying legislation that would establish a mandatory, publicly-accessible lobbyist registry.

The proposed legislation would make registration mandatory for lobbyists, allowing Yukoners to know who is communicating with elected officials and public servants, and on what topics.

Yukoners are invited to provide their feedback on this proposed legislation from August 6 to September 4, 2018, through an online survey found at engageyukon.ca.

Our government committed to creating a publicly disclosed lobbyist registry to increase transparency and accountability around lobbying activities in the territory. We are seeking feedback to ensure the proposed legislation meets the needs of Yukoners.

Premier Sandy Silver

Quick Facts

  • All provinces and the federal government have lobbyist legislation and registries.
  • Yukon would become the first northern jurisdiction with a lobbyist registry, as the Northwest Territories and Nunavut do not currently have lobbyist legislation.
  • There are two types of lobbyists, both of which would be covered by the proposed legislation:
    • Consultant lobbyists are self-employed or work for firms that receive payment for lobbying on behalf of a client.
    • In-house lobbyists communicate with public office holders to lobby on behalf of the company or the organization that employs them.
