Governments Celebrate Official Grand Opening Of The Chief Drygeese Government Building And Conference Centre
Dettah, Northwest Territories, – September 21, 2009 – The Honourable Senator Patrick Brazeau, along with the Honourable Michael McLeod, Minister Responsible for Infrastructure, today joined Yellowknives Dene First Nation Chiefs Edward Sangris and Ted Tsetta at the official opening of the Chief Drygeese Government Building and Conference Centre. The grand celebrations showcased the new $3.4 million conference centre in Dettah.“The Government of Canada, under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is proud to join with the Northwest Territories in supporting initiatives that will create jobs and stimulate our regional economy. Investing in infrastructure is key to helping our Northern communities grow,” said Senator Brazeau. “Today’s opening symbolizes what can happen when governments work together with communities. The new Chief Drygeese Government Building and Conference Centre will enhance the foundation of the community and improve the quality of life for the people who live and work here.”
“The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to supporting projects like the Chief Drygeese Government Building and Conference Centre which has improved municipal infrastructure, and created jobs,” added Minister McLeod. “The Centre will help build a stronger, sustainable, vibrant community, which is a key priority of our Government.”
Thanks to the support of the federal and territorial governments, and the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, local residents and visitors to Dettah are now able to enjoy a new, state-of-the-art, 450-person meeting facility. Funding for the new complex was provided through the Northwest Territories 2009-2010 Accelerated Capital Plan, which includes 32 infrastructure initiatives (and eligible administration costs) worth $172,893,537, including the Chief Drygeese Government Building and Conference Centre. Through the 2009-2010 Accelerated Capital Plan, the Government of Canada has committed to provide $114,395,200 from the Provincial-Territorial (PT) Base Fund towards the 32 initiatives and the Government of the Northwest Territories will contribute $52,703,236. The remaining $5,795,101 will be provided by other sources, including community and private funding.
Canada and the Northwest Territories are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that will help communities improve their infrastructure. Both governments have agreed to work together with the NWT Association of Communities to ensure that these infrastructure funds are delivered quickly and efficiently for priority initiatives throughout the territory.
