Governor General to Visit Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk

OTTAWA–Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will visit Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories from April 13 to 17, 2008. While in the Beaufort-Delta Region, Her Excellency will meet with leaders, elders and youth from the Gwich’in, Inuvialuit and Metis communities.During her stay in Inuvik, which will be marking its 50th anniversary this summer, Her Excellency will take part in a discussion with the Gwich’in people at the newly built Wellness camp. In addition, the Governor General will present the Northern Medal to Inuvik resident Nellie Cournoyea, and will host a youth town hall meeting involving young people from throughout the region.
The Governor General will also deliver a keynote address and participate in the National Inuit Education Summit, entitled “Toward a National Inuit Education Strategy”, and presented by the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), which brings together educators from across the Arctic.
The Governor General will travel to Tuktoyaktuk where she will take part in a community gathering, featuring cultural performances, Arctic sport demonstrations and local crafts displays.
