TIMMINS – Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Jonathon Solomon is calling for an inquest into Courtney Scott’s death.

“We are challenged every day as leaders, community members and parents in the remote north to change the quality of life for our children and it is tragedy’s such as this that strengthens our resolve,” said Solomon, in a written statement issued Wednesday night. “We can’t ignore such tragic events and I will be calling for an inquest this is not an isolated case we have lost other children.”

The 16-year-old Scott, who was in foster care, died last week in a house fire at a residence located in Orléans, a suburb of Ottawa.

Her mother, Sheila Scott Singer-McKenzie and stepfather, Kavin Justin Singer-McKenzie, in an interview with The Daily Press this week spoke of the need for more foster homes closer to First Nation communities.
