Grand Council Of The Crees (Eeyou Istchee)/cree Nation Government Congratulates Edith Cloutier Honored By Québec’s Prix De La Justice
QUEBEC CITY, Quebec (December 5, 2017) – Recognized for her commitment and leadership with urban Aboriginal people, Edith Cloutier was honored today at the National Assembly with the highest honorary distinction in the field of law, the Prix de la justice du Québec.
Edith’s unique contributions in the last 30 years of her career with the Val d’Or Native Friendship Center have been influential in helping bring equal and quality justice for Indigenous peoples of the Province.
It takes a unique and special type of person who makes great personal sacrifices to create an environment where the most vulnerable of our society feel safe. Edith provided this, and more. Not only do the people she comes into contact with feel safe but she empowers them to feel that they can stand together and condemn unspeakable attacks on the dignity of a person.
Her efforts, and those of the brave women she helped stand, created a movement where the marginalized members of our communities stood up and dared to break a heavy silence. As Edith herself says, “The truth hurts, but after it’s said, we have work to do on building our relationships to make them better, more transparent.”
Without Mme Cloutier and these brave women there would have been no Viens Commission, which today makes it possible for victims of abuse and discrimination to come forward, to be heard, and help make our world a fairer, better one for everyone, regardless of where they are from.
Reconciliation is not possible without people like Edith Cloutier.
The Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee)/Cree Nation Governments extends its warmest congratulations to Edith on this prestigious award and thanks her for her unwavering resilience.
