A Grande Prairie artist has received her first Juno nomination in recognition of being one of the country’s top Indigenous artists.
Celeigh Cardinal is up for the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year at the Juno Awards later this month in Saskatoon.
“I’m super excited, still a little bit in shock, I’ll be honest, and a little bit overwhelmed but generally just feeling super, super lucky and super grateful,” said Cardinal.
The nomination comes for her work on her self-released album Stories from a Downtown Apartment. Cardinal said her music is a mix of “rootsy-folk” and blues, and she often describes it as “genreless.” She hopes she can use the recognition she will get from the nomination to increase Indigenous representation in popular music.
