WINNIPEG – Tomorrow morning, at 10:00 AM, September 15th 2007, over 30 Metis students will be congratulated for their success and presented with Scholarship and Bursary awards at the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) Annual General Assembly at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. MMF President David Chartrand and the Honourable Vic Toews, Q.C., M.P., President of the Treasury Board, will present the awards in a special ceremony.

This special event in honour of the recipients of the MMF Health and Wellness Scholarship and Bursary Awards has been made possible by a partnership with Health Canada through the Health Human Resources Initiative. This partnership with Health Canada marks the beginning for the Metis People accessing federal health funding.“Our Metis students are role models for our Youth. We are pleased to have an opportunity to assist them in building their future and becoming leaders in their profession,” said MMF President Chartrand. “These scholarships and bursaries are crucial to reaching their goals and securing their future as they pursue their careers in the health field.”

“Today’s event is truly inspiring for our families and our community,” said President Chartrand. “With this presentation, this year the MMF has committed and announced nearly $500 thousand in scholarships and bursaries for Metis students through this initiative.”

These scholarships and bursaries will help our students to study in over twenty six health professions. We’re awarding 9 scholarships in medicine, 2 in dentistry in addition to scholarships in psychology, social work, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, chiropractics, nutrition and other fields. These post-secondary students are attending the Universities of Winnipeg, Brandon, and Manitoba and the University College of the North in Thompson and The Pas.

“I want to thank the former Prime Minister Paul Martin for starting this initiative. I want to also thank the New Government and especially Minister of Health Tony Clement for his continued support and commitment, and his staff’s hard work in making this initiative and today’s presentation a reality.”
