Toronto, Ontario –This August, Humber College’s School of Creative and Performing Arts partners with Humber’s Aboriginal Resource Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts to host concurrent Indigenous-led master classes covering best practices for editing and publishing Indigenous writers and stories. With generous support from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the Indigenous Editors Circle and Editing Indigenous Manuscripts workshop develop practical editing skills through case studies and culturally informed dialogue. The faculty includes Warren Cariou, Cherie Dimaline, Gregory Scofield, and faculty co-ordinator Gregory Younging, as well as non-Indigenous guest panelists from the Toronto publishing community.

“We’re honoured to continue the work of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, which first developed these workshops,” says Steve Bellamy, dean of Creative and Performing Arts. “Recent events have underscored the urgent need for more Indigenous editors, as well as for greater cultural sensitivity in non-Indigenous editors and publishers. These workshops aim to build capacity and ultimately support the publication of more Indigenous writers and content.”

The workshops, which run from August 13 to 19, share faculty and morning sessions, with afternoon sessions broken out by workshop stream. The Indigenous Editors Circle serves as a peer-led collaborative forum for Indigenous editors, while the Editing Indigenous Manuscripts workshop helps non-Indigenous publishing professionals develop the knowledge and sensitivities needed to publish Indigenous content. For non-Indigenous editors looking for an overview of cultural protocols and community values, there is also a new two-day workshop stream scheduled for August 14 and 15, 2017.
