Implementing The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
On September 13, 2007, the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the Declaration). The Declaration establishes a universal framework of minimum standards for the survival, dignity, well-being and rights of the world’s indigenous peoples. Canada was one of only four nations to vote against it.
On February 19th and 20th, 2008, the Assembly of First Nations and the British Columbia First Nations Leadership Council will co-host a Symposium on how to implement the Declaration and why this is so important to First Nations in Canada and Indigenous peoples everywhere. To be held at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre on Squamish First Nation, North Vancouver, B.C., Indigenous leaders, international experts and others will outline the steps that you can take to implement the Declaration, how we can overcome the misinformation campaign by the Government of Canada aimed at undermining the Declaration and what the Declaration means to the future of Indigenous peoples around the world, including First Nations in Canada.
See the links on this site to the Declaration itself and other information to better understand what you can get from this Symposium and why you need to be there.

First Nations were deeply disappointed about the federal Government’s decision last year to not support the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. AFN is continuing to work internationally to advance First Nations interests. If you would like to send a letter to the UN to express your concerns about Canada’s stance on the Declaration, please use the following letter as a template (word).
