IMPORTANT REMINDER – Métis Nation of Alberta Responds to Appeal Court’s Ruling on Interim Métis Harvesting Agreement
Edmonton, AB (January 24, 2007) – Audrey Poitras, President of the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) and the MNA Provincial Council, will hold a press conference to respond to the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench recently released decision in the R. v. Kipp Kelley (“the Kelley appeal”). The press conference will be held at:
Ramada (Edmonton Inn) Nova Scotia Room
11834 Kingsway, Edmonton
Wednesday, January 24
The Kelley appeal deals with whether the Interim Métis Harvesting Agreement (“IMHA”) can act as defence for Métis harvesters who are charged under Alberta’s fish and wildlife legislation. The IMHA is a negotiated agreement, signed in 2004, by the Government of Alberta and the Métis Nation of Alberta in response to the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in R. v. Powley – the landmark case that confirmed Métis have constitutionally protected rights.
President Poitras will be joined by Cecil Bellrose (MNA’s Minister for Métis Rights), Jason Madden (Legal Counsel for Mr. Kelley) and Métis leadership from throughout the province.
