Improving our understanding of the health, social and economic impacts of cannabis legalization and regulation

TORONTO, January 24, 2018 – Bill Blair, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and to the Minister of Health, visited CAMH today to announce $1.4 million in funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for research to support the development of policies and programs related to the legalization and regulation of cannabis.

Among the 14 projects announced, CAMH Scientist Dr. Sergio Rueda is leading a study to examine how cannabis legalization affects diverse communities in four provinces, including Indigenous and racialized communities, and explore how provincial and community service authorities and policy stakeholders can coordinate responses.

The research announced today is expected to lay a foundation to develop further studies on the broader impacts of non-medical cannabis legalization and regulation in Canada, and help inform the ongoing development of policies, practices and programs involving cannabis.  Read the full release issued by the Government of Canada below.
