INAC’s First Nation Housing Program

by NationTalk on October 23, 20071966 Views

Revised: 2007-10-22

In the 1960s, INAC introduced a housing program to assist in the construction and renovation of housing on reserves. The program provided subsidies for new residential construction and the renovation and rehabilitation of existing houses.

With the introduction of a 1996 On-Reserve Housing Policy, certain restrictions on the use of the subsidies were removed providing First Nations with greater flexibility and control over housing policies and programs in their communities.First Nations who have not voluntarily adopted the 1996 policy approach continue to operate under the 1960 subsidy program.

The 1996 policy is based on the principles of First Nations control, First Nations expertise, shared responsibilities and increased access to private sector financing. This policy lets First Nations play a key role in decisions about how, where and when housing funds are invested.
