INFORMATION ADVISORY Re: Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement Funds Remain Fully Available to Common Experience Payment Applicants
Re: Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement Funds Remain Fully Available to Common Experience Payment Applicants
OTTAWA, November 15, 2007- Despite recent media reports to the contrary, we want to assure you that the Government of Canada is in no way taking money away from the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement to fund other programs. You may rest assured that the full $1.9 billion in support of the Common Experience Payment for the Settlement Agreement is available for the claimants.
The $1.9 billion in funding is managed through a Trust Account created in September 2007, minus the advance payments of $82.6 million which had already been issued by Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada to former students who resided at Indian Residential Schools, and who were 65 or older on May 30, 2005 the day the settlement negotiations were initiated.
We want to assure you that the Government remains committed to processing the Common Experience Payment applications as quickly and efficiently as possible, and to a fair and lasting resolution to the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.
