A public inquest into the death of Austin Eaglechief will be held March 25-29, 2019, at Court of Queen’s Bench in Saskatoon. The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with remaining start times to be determined by the presiding coroner.

Eaglechief, 22, was in a vehicle being pursued by the Saskatoon Police Service on June 19, 2017. The vehicle crashed and police found the driver was not breathing. An officer commenced CPR until medical personnel arrived a short time later and confirmed that the driver was deceased.

Section 19 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner may direct that an inquest be held into the death of any person.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

Coroner Tim Hawryluk of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
