International Women’s Day Should be National Holiday
For Immediate Release
Ottawa, ON (March 7, 2008) – As many Aboriginal women meet with Governor General Michaëlle Jean on International Women’s Day, March 8th, it is a time to reflect on the advances made by women, and a time to move forward in addressing the challenges that remain. The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) believes that it is time that the day is observed as a national holiday in Canada. “Women have a strong and important role in our families, communities, and in our society. They are the bearers of children, our teachers and Elders, and their accomplishments inspire many,” President Beverley Jacobs said.
“If Canada joins the number of countries around the world that recognize International Women’s Day as a national statutory holiday, the government would send a positive and meaningful message. All women in Canada need to see the government take such an initiative to affirm the empowerment of women, highlight their abundant contributions to Canada, and inspire future woman leaders in the process,” added President Jacobs.
NWAC has existed for over thirty years as the national voice for Aboriginal women in Canada. It continues to work to enhance, promote, and foster the social, economic, cultural and political well-being of Aboriginal women within Canadian society.
