With the House of Commons set to reopen for a special one-day sitting later this morning, all eyes are — or will be, at least — on Finance Minister Bill Morneau as he prepares to deliver an “economic and fiscal snapshot” that, as iPolitics previewed yesterday, will likely provide “an austere account” of the state of the national balance sheet, but could nevertheless “offer early signals” on what the minority Liberals “have in mind for an economic recovery.” (1:40 PM)

As per the Globe and Mail, Morneau is also expected to share his first official projection on the deficit for the current fiscal year, which, as per “senior government officials,” is already estimated to be “in excess of $300 billion.”

He will not, however, be unveiling any new policies or spending plans, according to a third Globe source — a prediction that would seem to be backed up by the absence of any new legislation on the Commons notice paper for today.
