ALSO TODAY: New COVID-19 cost estimates from Parliamentary Budget Office — MPs continue to explore virtual voting options
With less than three weeks to go before Canada’s bid to secure a temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council will be decided via secret ballot, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is heading back out on the virtual international circuit, courtesy of a morning appearance at the Global Vaccine Summit, which, as per the official website, expects to welcome “more than 25 heads of state,” as well as philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates and other private sector partners and supporters, in a one-day push to raise up to $10 billion in pledges.
As Canadian Press notes, the online meet-up will take place just one day after Trudeau spoke at a summit of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States, where he made it clear that Canada “is committed to helping developing countries, hardest hit by the pandemic” — which, as the wire service points out, “will include ensuring any new vaccine is distributed to poor countries, and avoiding past practice, notably the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, that saw the wealthiest buyers get it first.”
