ALSO TODAY: Canadian parliamentarians raise detentions during China tour
After a post-holiday weekend that, thanks to 604 Now Vancouver, we now know involved at least a few hours on the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to make a mid-afternoon appearance at the Canada – Modern Treaty and Self-Governing First Nations Forum, where, as per the advisory from his office, he’ll deliver opening remarks before an audience that is also expected to include a trio of senior front benchers: Crown-Indigenous Services Minister Carolyn Bennett, Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott and Environment Minister Catherine McKenna.
And while the notice makes no mention of setting aside time for Trudeau to take questions from the press, if he does decide to make himself available to the attending media, he’ll doubtless face a barrage of follow-up queries on his phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday night. As per what the Toronto Star’s Tonda McCharles describes as a “more-detailed-than-usual” post-chat readout, the call covered a wide range of current issues, from the pending GM plant closures to the Americans’ ongoing efforts to extradite Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, as well as the continuing detention of two Canadians in China.
