Ottawa, Ontario – September 28, 2009 – The following statement was released today by the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, and the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), on the election of Ms. Jeannette Corbiere-Lavell as the new President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada:”We are pleased to offer our congratulations to the new President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada.
This Government remains committed to making a real difference in the quality of life for Aboriginal women across Canada. Therefore, we are investing in initiatives that support Aboriginal women and address issues such as economic development, health and well-being, the need for safe communities, and the importance of empowering more Aboriginal women to take on leadership roles. We are looking forward to working with the new President.
We also wish to acknowledge the leadership of Past-President Beverley Jacobs, who has led the organization with distinction.”
