Kaha:wi Dance Theatre (KDT) is pleased to announce the World Premiere of TransMigration,a co-production with Harbourfront Centre’s Planet IndigenUs as part of the NextSteps11/12 Series at the Fleck Dance Theatre. Four years in the making, TransMigration celebrates Norval Morrisseau’s visual language through sublime dance and music, vibrating with colour, energy and sensuality. Inspired by the paintings and life of iconic Ojibwe shaman-artist Norval Morrisseau, TransMigration is a dialogue and a response to his vision, struggles and brilliance as an artist. TransMigration pays homage to “The Artist” and is ultimately a reflection of humanity and the power of spirit to transform and transcend.

The creative team for TransMigrationincludes Artistic Direction/Choreography/Design by Santee Smith, Video Design by Andy Moro, and Lighting Design by Alaina Perttula, among others. TransMigration’s score features indigenous musicians who are pushing boundaries in the same fashion that Norval’s work went beyond the expected: Tanya Tagaq, CrisDerksen, A Tribe Called Red, Vince Fontaine and Barbara Croall, with music supervising by Stevie Salas. A cast of 8 performers bring to life characters including The Artist, Thunderbird, Serpents, Madonna and Child and more.
