Toronto criminal lawyer Shaunna Kelly is organizing a series of educational workshops about aboriginal justice issues to boost awareness and understanding of Gladue Court.
“There is sometimes a reluctance on the part of defence lawyers to practise in Gladue Court and it mostly comes from a lack of exposure, not so much with the Gladue principles, but with the culture,” she tells AdvocateDaily.com.
Kelly, associate with Hicks Adams LLP, is organizing the panel discussions under the auspices of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association (CLA). The series aims to demystify aboriginal justice issues.
“When you have issues of cultural sensitivity and things that you’re not totally comfortable with, people tend to shy away,” she says.
