Kinew James inquest hears poorly managed diabetes led to inmate’s death – Advocate Daily

SASKATOON – A forensic pathologist has testified that poorly managed diabetes led to a Saskatoon Regional Psychiatric Centre inmate’s death.

Dr. Shaun Ladham took the stand Tuesday at an inquest into the death of Kinew James, 35, who died in her cell at the centre in January 2013.

The inquiry has previously heard she suffered cardiac arrest, but Ladham said it was the result of mismanaged diabetes.

James’ fellow inmates told the Elizabeth Fry Society, an advocacy group for women in the justice system, that she had asked for help from staff numerous times on the day she died.

The society has said it hopes the inquest in Saskatoon will lead to better care for aboriginal women with mental health issues who are serving time in prison.
