Laurier to Graduate Nearly 2,200 Students at Spring Convocation

WATERLOO — Nearly 2,200 students will officially graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University during seven convocation ceremonies June 4 to 11, including the university’s first graduates from its Faculty of Education.As of June 3, 2,169 students had met all program requirements and qualified to graduate. Laurier expects to confer 202 graduate degrees, 1,942 undergraduate degrees and 25 diplomas. On average, 80 percent of Laurier graduands attend convocation ceremonies. Laurier will hold five ceremonies in Waterloo and two at the Laurier campus in Brantford.
“Convocation is a moment of pride for students, along with their family and friends, as they celebrate their academic achievements,” said university registrar Ray Darling. “Many of them will treasure this milestone for years to come.”
This year’s ceremonies begin Wednesday June 4 at 1 p.m. with the official installation of Laurier’s new chancellor, John A. Pollock, who was appointed in March.
The following ceremonies make up Laurier’s spring convocation:
Wednesday June 4, 1 p.m., Laurier Athletic Complex, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Education, Installation of Chancellor John A. Pollock.
• 8 doctorate degrees; 194 master’s degrees and 3 graduate diplomas; 68 Bachelor of Education degrees
• Distinguished Governor Award: Mr. Jim Beingessner
• Teaching Assistant Award of Excellence: Dr. Stephen Connor, History
Thursday, June 5, 10 a.m., Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, School of Business and Economics.
• 171 Bachelor of Business Administration degrees, 56 Honours Bachelor of Arts degrees (economics), 21 General Bachelor of Arts degrees (economics), and 19 diplomas
• Honorary Doctor of Laws degree: Dr. Robert Rosehart, former president and vice-chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University and Lakehead University
Thursday, June 5, 2 p.m., Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, Faculty of Music and Faculty of Science.
• 49 Bachelor degrees and 3 diplomas from the Faculty of Music
• Faculty of Science: 202 Honours Bachelor of Arts degrees, 150 Honours Bachelor of Science degrees and 56 General Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees
• Wilfrid Laurier University Award for Teaching Excellence for Part-Time Faculty: Professor Camie Condon, Department of Psychology
• Honorary Doctor of Laws degree: Dr. Lorna Marsden, former president of Wilfrid Laurier University and of York University, former member of the Senate of Canada
Friday, June 6, 10 a.m. (general program) and 2 p.m. (honours program), Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, Faculty of Arts.
• 249 General Bachelors degrees and 586 Honours Bachelors degrees from the Faculty of Arts
• Wilfrid Laurier University Award for Teaching Excellence: Dr. Mary-Louise Byrne, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (afternoon ceremony)
• Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees: Fred Nichols, dean of students emeritus at Laurier (morning ceremony); Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Winnipeg and former federal cabinet minister (afternoon ceremony)
Wednesday, June 11, Noon (Bachelor of Arts) and 3 p.m. (Concurrent Bachelor of Arts (Laurier)/Bachelor of Education (Nipissing) students, and Bachelor of Arts with Children’s Education and Development option, Laurier students), The Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts, Laurier Brantford.
• 334 General and Honours Bachelor of Arts degrees, including Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degrees.
• Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees: Graham Greene, member of Oneida First Nation and Oscar-nominated actor (morning ceremony); John Kim Bell, conductor, composer and pianist born in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake (afternoon ceremony).
