When 22-year-old Colten Boushie was fatally shot on a Saskatchewan farm last August, tensions between rural residents and Indigenous people were laid bare on social media.

Some people suggested Boushie, a resident of the Red Pheasant First Nation, deserved to be killed. Others pledged vigilante justice against Gerald Stanley, the farmer charged with murder in connection with his death. On the one-year anniversary of the shooting, the StarPhoenix talks to groups in the province about how the tragedy has affected race relations in Saskatchewan in the last 12 months.

Although the last year has been marred by fear and anger, FSIN vice-chief Heather Bear said Boushie’s death and the subsequent conversations online also created more awareness that racism still exists in Saskatchewan and encouraged more people to take a stance against it.
