Eyre disrespects the history and intent of treaty agreements

As grand chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), I am compelled to respond when necessary to public officials when there is a disrespect towards the history and intent of treaty agreements. It is through these agreements that our ancestors have been able to live in a society that flourishes with the richness of its wildlife, resources and cultural diversity. Although others have already responded to Education Minister Bronwyn Eyre’s comments, I am asking her as a public official to take this opportunity to learn from this experience.

This improved understanding of treaties can be accommodated by the TRC’s recommendation on professional development and training for public servants, number 57: “We call upon federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments to provide education to public servants on the history, and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.”
