CHIPPEWAS OF THE THAMES FIRST NATION – The boy and his uncle made a daily trip to their fishing hole at the Thames River to check for pickerel.
Their nets were at a bend where the current ran faster. The boy ran down the tractor path to the riverbank filled with anticipation. More often than not, there weren’t any pickerel, only suckers.
They’d trudge back up the muddy bank to the uncle’s car, open the trunk, pull out a stick and scrape the mud off their boots.
“Uncle, why do we do this every day?” the boy asked.
Fishing for pickerel was a lot like life, the uncle said. We’re excited about checking the nets. Sometimes, there are disappointments and challenges
