Liberal Leader – Aboriginal Issues Should be a Priority in this Election

OTTAWA – A new Liberal government will focus on quality of life issues and renewing relations between the government and First Nations, Métis and Inuit, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion said today.

“The future of Canada is tied to the fortunes of Aboriginal Peoples. In the post-apology era, it is crucial to move beyond symbolic support of Aboriginal Peoples. To move forward we need to take real action to reduce poverty. So far we haven’t heard anything from Conservative Leader Stephen Harper on this issue,” said Mr. Dion.Mr. Dion made his comments on the National Day of Political Action and highlighted the eight Aboriginal candidates who are running under the Liberal banner in this election.

“Our talented team of Aboriginal candidates includes accomplished actors, consultants, and business owners,” he said.

Mr. Dion criticized Mr. Harper for his silence on Aboriginal issues during this election campaign. Mr. Harper is the only national party leader not appearing in a video that asks the leaders to respond to questions about how they would address Aboriginal poverty and poverty issues in general.

“I am calling for Aboriginal issues to be a topic in the upcoming leaders’ debate. I believe all Canadians are interested in the plans of the leaders to build on the residential school apology and to end poverty for First Nations, Métis and Inuit,” said Mr. Dion.
