McGuinty Government Committed To Quality, Accessible Higher Education
The Reaching Higher Plan Is A Success And The Results Prove It
TORONTO, Feb. 7 /CNW/ – The McGuinty government has funded 86,000 more quality spaces for students and made college and university education more affordable.
“Our priority is more opportunities for high quality postsecondary education for Ontario students,” Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Chris Bentley said. “That’s why we’re investing $6.2 billion more, including $4.3 billion more in operating grants to colleges and universities and $1.5 billion more for student aid.”
The Reaching Higher Plan has achieved results:
<> “We believe that everyone deserves a fair shot at success. That’s why there are more spaces, more grants, more assistance and better quality,” Bentley said.
Under the Reaching Higher plan, the government is investing three new dollars for every one new dollar students are asked to contribute to their education. In comparison, annual government funding for postsecondary education went down from 1991-2003, while tuition went up. This year, about 90 per cent of college students are paying only $100 more in tuition and about 70 per cent of university students are paying only $200 more than in 2003-04.
“One jurisdiction has demonstrated a will to invest in postsecondary education and skills training and that is Ontario. The current government has invested $6.2 billion more into Ontario’s colleges and universities,” said Tyler Charlebois, Director of Advocacy for the College Student Alliance.
