Media Advisory: AFN National Chief to celebrate Public Health Day at Naotkamegwanning First Nation and receive H1N1 vaccine with Chief White and Community Leaders

OTTAWA, Nov. 2 – On November 5th AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo will visit the Naotkamegwanning First Nation to celebrate a Public Health Day. The National Chief will also join Chief Warren White and other community leaders as they receive their H1N1 vaccination.Naotkamegwanning First Nation has dramatically improved its public health services since signing onto a unique partnership with Health Canada and the province. As a result the community is well-prepared for public health emergencies such as the outbreak of H1N1. Naotkamegwanning is one of six First Nation communities that are members of the Kenora Chiefs Advisory, which are involved in the 5 year tripartite Public Health Pilot project.

In celebrating their success the community will be holding a Public Health Day. Media are invited to accompany community leaders on a tour that will include will include information sessions about public health, H1N1 and traditional medicine.

As well a new Influenza School Surveillance Tool for First Nations will be launched. The tool will assist First Nations schools across Canada in helping to manage public health emergencies like H1N1.

The Naotkamegwanning First Nation is located near Kenora.
