Media Advisory: Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada Annual General Meeting

December 7th, 2007 – Ottawa – Martha Greig, President of Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada announced that nominations open today for the Annual General Meeting of its Board of Directors and delegates. Inuit women representing youth, urban, and Arctic communities will convene in Ottawa, January 28 – 30, 2008.“This year marks the 23rd anniversary of Pauktuutit” said President Martha Greig, “and Pauktuutit’s commitment as the voice of Inuit women is more important than ever given the unacceptable socio-economic circumstances facing Inuit women in Canada’s Arctic.”

WOMAN OF THE YEAR
As always, Pauktuutit will honour a very special ‘Woman of the Year’ to recognize her contribution to her community and to the Arctic. Inuit women nominate other Inuit woman for the 2008 Woman of the Year. Nominations open today and close 5:00 PM January 9th 2008. Nomination forms are available from your Pauktuutit Board member, your Mayor’s office and from our website www.pauktuutit.ca.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING DELEGATES
Pauktuutit places a high priority on ensuring far reaching participation at our AGM. Half the Board of directors is elected each year, for a two year term. Within ten geographic regions across the Arctic, each community takes its turn to send a delegate, chosen through local processes. Two youth delegates are chosen by the youth and two urban delegates are chosen by urban Inuit women’s communities in rotation. In keeping with this mandate, the following communities will each choose delegates for the January 2008 AGM:

Kivalliq – Qamini’tuaq
Kitikmeot – Umingmaktok
Western Arctic – Ikaahuk
Qikitani South – Kinngait
Qikitani North – Ikpiarjuk
Nunatsiavut – Happy Valley Goose Bay
Nunavik – Ungava Coast – Kangiqsujjuaq
Nunavik – Hudson Coast – Ivujivik
Urban – Edmonton and St. Johns
Youth – Rankin Inlet and Inuvik
Iqaluit
Yellowknife

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Directors to the Board will be elected this January from: Western Arctic, Qikitani North, Ungava Coast, Hudson Coast, plus one member each from Yellowknife and Iqaluit, one Urban member, and one Youth. Inuit women nominate Inuit women for the Board of Directors. Nominations open today and close at 5:00 PM on January 9th 2008.
