Media Release – MNCFN and Massey College Event – Oct 27th
Celebration of Massey College’s New Special Partnership with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation
Chief to be Named Honorary Senior Fellow
Friday October 27, at 7:30 am and 5:30 pm
The media are invited to join us for a sunrise ceremony and before an Indigenous High Table in the Quadrangle of Massey College.
The sunrise ceremony, conducted by Elder Garry Sault, begins at 7:30 am to mark the beginning of Massey College’s special partnership with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. The ceremony will take place in the presence of The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. A tour follows of the revisioned Chapel Royal, which includes themed commissions of a mural by artist Philip Cote and windows by glass artist Sarah Hall. The partnership arose from the designation of the Chapel Royal by the Queen on National Aboriginal Day.
At a special Indigenous High Table this evening, Chief Stacey LaForme will become only the third Honorary Senior Fellow, joining the Duke of Edinburgh and The Chancellor of Oxford University in the rarest honour the college can bestow.
The media are invited at 5:30 pm to meet with Chief LaForme before the extinguishing of the Sacred Fire by Elder Sault in the Quadrangle and the High Table.
Elder Sault will conduct a smudging (purification) ceremony in the public spaces of the college and students will have the opportunity to meet and speak with him throughout the day and to request personal smudgings.
We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada.
