Medical Students Receive Founding Dean Summer Medical Student Research Awards

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Earlier today, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) held its second-annual Founding Dean Summer Medical Student Research Award presentation. Eight students were presented with the awards during a lunch time reception held simultaneously at NOSM’s West Campus at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and at the East Campus at Laurentian University in Sudbury.“Our students are very excited to begin working on their research projects this summer,” said Dr. Greg Ross, NOSM’s Associate Dean of Research. “The Founding Dean Summer Medical Student Research Awards allow NOSM students to pursue hands-on research in a broad range of areas, from biological studies to social research.”

The following students earned the Founding Dean’s Summer 2007 Medical Student Research Awards:

-Bruce Cook
-Brandon Entwistle
-Angela Golas
-Danielle Hamilton
-Andrea Haner
-Lana Potts
-Matt Strickland
-Kimberly Varty

This year’s student projects include the following topics:

~ The role of lipoic acid in preventing the death of lung cells as a result of exposure to paraquat, a common pesticide;
~ New techniques used to stabilize hip fractures;
~ The treatment of social phobia;
~ The potential benefits of using combinations of local anesthetics (of differing duration of effect) to identify an ideal mixture;
~ Pain management strategies for knee surgery patients in a hospital setting;
~ The perceived social and environmental factors that may contribute to the prevalence of diabetes in First Nation communities;
~ The examination of knowledge and attitudes of the women of some of Africa’s poorest regions towards cervical cancer and HIV/AIDS; and,
~ The history of cross-cultural medical and health professional education, with a focus on rural and remote community-based experiences.

In March of this year, another six medical students were presented with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO) Summer Medical Student Awards for NOSM.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is a pioneering faculty of medicine. The School is a joint initiative of Lakehead and Laurentian Universities, with main campuses in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, and multiple teaching and research sites across Northern Ontario. By educating skilled physicians and undertaking health research suited to community needs, the School will become a cornerstone of community health care in Northern Ontario.
