Metis Nation (MB) and Canada Working Together to Advance Metis Nation Priorities
March 19, 2018
Ottawa, ON – Today members of the Manitoba Metis Government Caucus met alongside the Metis National Council with representatives of Canada for the first permanent bilateral meeting of 2018. The goal of the meeting was to engage in post-budget advancements and strategic planning between Canada and the Metis Nation on Metis Nation priorities.
“These meetings between the Metis National Council and Canada are incredibly important because they allow us to engage in discussions in an open, honest and transparent way,” said David Chartrand, President of the Manitoba Metis Federation and Vice-President of the Metis National Council. “We discussed the ten priority areas for the Metis Nation and how those fit within the budget tabled by Canada less than one month ago.”
Areas of discussion included Metis Nation: skills, employment and training, early learning child care, the new fiscal relationship between Canada and the Metis Nation, recognition and implementation of indigenous rights framework, health, child and family services, housing, post-secondary education, economic development and veterans. Some discussion was also held around advancing the 60s Scoop agenda. More discussions will take place throughout the year.
“As long as Canada continues to work alongside the Metis Nation, we can expect to see some big, positive changes coming this year,” said President Chartrand. “I’m optimistic about what the future holds for the Metis Nation and I look forward to ongoing discussions with Canada on behalf of our Metis Citizens.”
