Métis Rendezvous 2009

MIDLAND, ON, September 8, 2009 — The Southern Georgian Bay Métis Community, in partnership with the Township of Tiny, is pleased to host the Fifth Annual Métis Rendezvous at the Lafontaine Parks and Recreation Centre, on Saturday September 19th, 2009.The Métis Rendezvous is a community gathering held every year to celebrate the history and culture of the Métis people who have resided in the area since the arrival of their ancestors around 1828. September 19th is also significant to people across the Métis homeland because it is the anniversary of the Powley Decision., the Supreme Court of Canada ruling which, in 2003 recognized Métis harvesting rights in the province of Ontario.

Among the day’s highlights, a visit from Brad Duguid, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, who will bring greetings on behalf of the Government of Ontario at 3:30 p.m. Live entertainment is scheduled from 1-5 p.m., so bring your chair and prepare to be entertained. Make time to drop by the Métis market which will feature a wide array of Métis wares, including unique hand made arts and crafts.

The fish fry supper gets underway at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 each and a limited number will be available at the door. If you want to guarantee you’ll get a taste of fresh Georgian Bay fish you are encouraged to buy your tickets in advance at the Georgian Bay Métis Council office, 355 Cranston Crescent, Midland.

Admission to the 2009 Métis Rendezvous is free and the gates open at noon with activities beginning at 1:00 p.m. There will be plenty of hands-on activities for children and adults alike with cultural activities and demonstrations taking place throughout the day. Plan to stay for the day so you don’t miss out on anything!
