Edmonton… The history, culture and contributions of Métis people are being recognized during Métis Week, November 11-17. Métis Week celebrations will be held in Alberta communities and across the country, including special events commemorating Métis leader Louis Riel.

“Métis Week is an annual celebration of the important role that Métis people have in the continued economic and cultural vibrancy of Alberta,” said Robin Campbell, Minister of Aboriginal Relations. “Alberta is proud of the positive and productive 80 year relationship it shares with the province’s Métis communities. We remain committed to working with Métis people to build an even brighter future for their families and communities.”

With over 85,000 Métis people living in the province, Alberta is home to the largest Métis population in Canada. Alberta is also the only province with a legally recognized Métis land base—the eight Métis Settlements.
