Mining Association of British Columbia Commends Sector’s Progress on Sustainable Development
Thursday, 28 April 2011
Pierre Gratton, President of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) commended BC’s mining sector for its steady progress in embracing responsible mining and sustainable development.
In an address to those attending the Minerals North Conference in Stewart today, Gratton noted that “it is no longer enough to point to jobs and wealth creation and expect the public to support the mining industry,” said Gratton. “For mining to succeed today, we have to embrace sustainable development.”BC’s mining sector is in a period of renaissance; in fact, BC is home to more new mining projects than any other jurisdiction in Canada and further expansion is underway. Growth of this magnitude is possible only by earning the trust and confidence of British Columbians. To sustain this growth, says Gratton, the industry must continue to earn and maintain the public trust.
Efforts over the past several years show promising results: recent surveys conducted by MABC in communities across the province show consistent and significant support for mining. In fact, the industry is considered an environmentally responsible, safe, and vital part of communities in many regions. Several MABC members have demonstrated their commitment to sustainable development for many years through adherence to leading initiatives such as the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining initiative, while others are moving in this direction.
“Sustainable development means something a little different in our industry than in some others,” says Gratton. “Though mines are finite, the industry’s contribution to human capital is ongoing; by working closely with communities and First Nations, BC’s mining sector can play a major role in building stronger, more resilient communities that creates opportunities for their people.”
