Ref. #2-3638
Calgary, Alberta (March 13th, 2012) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement on the occasion of the 12th Annual Arctic Oil and Gas Symposium in Calgary, Alberta.
“The Annual Arctic Oil and Gas Symposium is an important opportunity to explore challenges and opportunities for Canadian Arctic oil and gas development. Our Government will continue to encourage partnerships between stakeholders in the North and the oil and gas sector to ensure globally competitive, robust oil and gas development in Canada’s North. The Government of Canada’s Action Plan to improve Northern Regulatory Regimes will improve investment opportunities, foster long-term economic growth and job creation as well as strengthen environmental protection in the North which will benefit all Canadians.
In addition to being a fundamental part of our Canadian heritage and our national identity, the North, with its significant oil, gas and mineral potential will play an important role in our country’s future economic growth. Unlocking this resource potential in partnership with Northerners, territorial governments and Aboriginal peoples, without compromising environmental protection, will lead to jobs, economic growth and increased revenues to support the priorities of Canadians.”
