Minister Goodale informs Canadians of the new RCMP Commissioner’s mandate

OTTAWA – May 7, 2018 – Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement:

“On March 9, 2018, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced the appointment of Brenda Lucki as the Commissioner Designate of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). This appointment was effective April 16. Today, I am pleased to inform Canadians of Commissioner Lucki’s mandate letter.

The Government believes that Canadians should know what they can expect from their RCMP Commissioner and have a clear sense of the goals that must be met. The mandate letter helps to make this clear:

Commissioner Lucki will be expected to reinforce the very best of the RCMP, and support the organization through a period of transformation that will modernize and reform its culture and its management practices. She will be mandated to protect the health and safety of RCMP employees and members, including from harassment and violence in the workplace, and support their mental wellness.

Her mandate also includes leading the RCMP in a manner that strengthens our continued efforts for a renewed, nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous Peoples, based on recognition of rights, respect, cooperation and partnership. And of course, it includes ensuring the sound overall management of the RCMP, making sure it delivers high-quality police services based on appropriate priorities to keep Canadians safe and protect their civil liberties.

The Government recognizes that police independence underpins the rule of law. The Commissioner herself has the control and management of the RCMP. This mandate letter does not, in any way, impinge upon the independence of RCMP operations.

I look forward to a productive and collaborative working relationship with Commissioner Lucki.”
