Minister of Foreign Affairs hosts first meeting of NAFTA Council in advance of renegotiations
August 10, 2017 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke today with the members of the newly created NAFTA Council about the upcoming renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Minister Freeland thanked the members for their engagement and commitment. The 13 members represent a diversity of expertise from across the country, such as labour, business and Indigenous interests from across Canada. The Minister reiterated that the NAFTA Council is expected to provide unfiltered advice in advance of and during the course of renegotiations with Mexico and the United States. Their input will ensure the Minister and Canada’s negotiating team have broad perspectives from across Canada.
The Council’s role will complement the feedback being provided by Canadians as part of the ongoing consultations conducted by Global Affairs Canada.
