Minister Strahl Announces Reappointment of Anthony Whitford as Northwest Territories Commissioner
Ottawa (April 14, 2008) – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the reappointment of Anthony Whitford as the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.“Mr. Whitford is committed to the growth and development of the Northwest Territories,” said Minister Strahl. “He has been putting his knowledge of the North to good use as the Northwest Territories Commissioner for the past three years. Mr. Whitford will continue to serve an essential role in the governance of the territory.”
Anthony Whitford was born and raised in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. He served as Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories before being appointed Commissioner in April 2005.
In addition to legislative duties, the Commissioner also performs a ceremonial role by representing the Government of the Northwest Territories at official and landmark events across the territory.
The Commissioner of the Northwest Territories is appointed by the Governor in Council of Canada on the recommendation of the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. The Commissioner is the federal government’s representative in the North and the Chief Executive Officer of the Northwest Territories.
Mr. Whitford’s appointment is effective April 29, 2008, for a period of two years.
