Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB –Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is encouraging people living in the Thompson area to attend any of the events that are happening over the next two days:

  • Thursday, October 10 at 1 pm: MKO and the Thompson Urban Aboriginal Strategy are hosting a “soft launch” of a residential school memorial in Thompson Lions Park
  • Thursday, October 10 at 4 pm: MKO is hosting its second annual Fall Feast at the Bill Comaskey Wellness Centre at 274 Thompson Drive North where people can enjoy a free meal, entertainment, and more—dinner is being served at 6 pm
  • Friday, October 11 at 11:30 am: MKO is introducing a “Girl Force” event at 55 Selkirk Avenue to mark the International Day of the Girl

“We have three exciting events lined up to build relationships in the City of Thompson. I invite individuals living in and around the city to come out to any of these three events—both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples are welcome,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “Our events today contribute to reconciliation and bridge building in the City of Thompson as we work to raise awareness of the legacy of residential schools through the launch of our memorial in Lions Park and as we seek to build relationships and share a little bit of our culture and traditions through our second annual Fall Feast in the evening.”

“On Friday we will host an event during the lunch hour to mark the International Day of the Girl,” stated Grand Chief Settee. “We will share a light lunch and refreshments at 55 Selkirk Avenue in Thompson. We are hosting this event to promote the empowerment of girls and to share the important teaching that our women and girls are sacred and valued members of our communities.”
