WINNIPEG – Tomorrow, people of Manitoba and citizens from the Metis Nation Homeland, and friends of the Metis will continue our long tradition of remembering the death and honouring the life of past Metis Leader and Manitoba Founder Louis Riel. Each year on this day the Metis Nation respectfully honours the life and celebrates the achievements of Louis Riel and the resilience and determination of the Metis People. The Manitoba Metis Federation and the Union nationale métisse St-Joseph du Manitoba continue an ongoing partnership, beginning the day with a procession starting at Riel House in St. Vital.

“For the Metis, this is a time to reflect on past sacrifices and prepare to face future challenges,” said MMF President David Chartrand. “It is a day to celebrate Riel’s achievements and his vision to create a Province in which the rights of Metis and other Peoples would be protected and respected.”

The MMF appreciates Mayor Sam Katz and the City of Winnipeg for their recognition of Louis Riel Day as they raise the Metis Infinity Flag tomorrow at 12 noon.

We invite all to join us as we retrace the steps of our Ancestors as they carried his body from his mother’s home to his final resting place in the St. Boniface Cemetery. There will also be a mass, reception, lunch and Metis cultural activities in recognition of this important day.
