MMIWG: Anniversary of the Death of Louis Riel
November 16 2018
November 16, 2018 — Commissioners of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, make the following statement in recognition of the anniversary of the death of Louis Riel:
“Louis Riel, founder of the Province of Manitoba, was a courageous and unrelenting defender of the rights of the Métis who fought for the fundamental values of diversity, equality and mutual respect. Today is a day to remember his life and reflect on his important legacy, which lives on in the hearts of the Métis Nation and all those who stand up to injustice, discrimination and oppression.
The principles Louis Riel stood for are profoundly relevant and inspiring as we work toward creating a safer world for Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people. Today, we encourage all Canadians to honour his memory and the ongoing contributions of the Métis people.”
